Public security units crack down on Tibetan separatists


Tibet People's Broadcasting Station, Lhasa, in Standard Chinese 1400 gmt 26 Jan 99 A regional meeting of public security bureau directors was held in Lhasa on 26th January. According to revelations at the meeting, last year public security organs, adhering to the guidelines on building up leading bodies, maintaining order, improving work, and ensuring safety, achieved notable results in safeguarding political and social stability, in consolidating the frontier, and in helping economic development throughout the region.

Giving top priority to safeguarding the region's social and political stability, public security organs at all levels severely cracked down on separatists'sabotage activities and waged a tit-for-tat struggle against the Dalai clique. In a bid to establish normal order in lamaseries, public security organs actively coordinated with the relevant departments in conducting patriotic education and the screening and consolidation work there. Through work in many areas, public security organs gradually reversed the anti-separatist struggle from a passive position of dealing with contingencies to an active position of putting the enemy under control, thereby grasping the initiative in the struggle against separatists.

Last year, public security organs at all levels in the region did a tremendous job in ensuring security in major political and economic arenas; and in properly handling incidents involving the masses [Chinese: qu zhong xing shi jian; probable STC's: 5028 5883 1840 0057 0115], which were triggered by contradictions among the people. In particular, public security organs achieved notable results in severely cracking down on criminal offences.

Public security organs throughout the region also stepped up efforts to investigate and handle cases related to serious public security problems in each locality. In response to complaints by local people, special campaigns were carried out to tackle prostitution and gambling, thereby effectively purifying the social environment.

Last year, public security organs at all levels in the region accelerated the reform of police substations, intensified the construction of public security organizations, carried out intensive education and consolidation campaigns, disengaged public security units from commercial activities, and improved the quality of public security personnel.
